These were from a series of three factsheets sharing the experiences of carers with palliative care: What is Palliative Care?, Discussing Palliative Care and Decision-making during Palliative Care. They are 3-4 pages each and available in Arabic, Chinese and Hindi, making up nine factsheets in total. The factsheets were quite complicated to design as they needed to alternate between the particular language and the English translation, and had to be flexible enough to work well with the different leading and spacing of each language.
The hardest were the Arabic ones, as the language is written right-to-left and my version of Indesign made the Arabic translation incomprehensible. After a lot of time spent googling and experimenting, I eventually found I needed to download the middle eastern version of Indesign and change the leading to metric rather than optical for the font to show correctly. I was lucky that my friend’s dad is Egyptian and was happy to help by being my translation checker.
